Personal Comments
::
Been called a sneaky bar steward in my time. Played stuff for ages. Work really strange shifts in a hospital lab. Can be relied on to laugh at in-oportune moments or utter "Bugger" upon getting taken out. Drink lots of coffee and eat lots of pies, hence the 1stHssr name. I DO NOT live in, visit, know anyone intimately, wish to appear like I am from, like the idea of, or understand how anyone could mistake my accent for somebody from, the hell-pit of London town.....I am a scouser through and through...though I do not like football or stealing hub-caps.

IN PROFILE: INTERVIEW CONDUCTED IN MARCH 2003
General Questions:
Can you start by introducing yourself?
Mark, and I am <mumble-mutter> years old. (Born in 1962 - work it out)

What's the story behind the alias(es)? - Why did you pick the Hussar one you did?

I thought that since I am another clan (Dunom Mortis) it would be a bit rich to take one of the more well known character names. I remember Mrs.Miggins Coffee Shoppe from one of the series, and hearing the name in other series too, but since I am a bloke it was a bit inappropriate. Being her dead husband though was feasable and appropriate as I am generally looking at the spawn interface.

When did you first start playing multi-player games and what were they?
I played D&D and AD&D about 15-20 years ago, but only got into online games relatively recently.
I played the C&C cames and AoE at a mates garage network, and Medal of Honor from almost when it was released. I was in the GFK MoH clan (now called HK), but left when thing began to get too serious and I stopped having fun.

Do you have a family and if so what do they think of you playing online games?
The missus has forgotten what the front of my head looks like, but at least the PC is in the living room so she knows just what I am doing online.

What other hobbies do you have outside gaming?
10 pin bowling, Reading, Skiing.

What do you like about where you live?

Liverpool is a really good place to live. Plenty of really good shops and places to go. Great museums all over the place. Generally friendly inhabitants....except in the estate where I live in Huyton, where there are some who would steal the steam off your sh*t if they could.

What is (are) your favourite colours? If you play IL-2 would you use them as your skin colour?
I like bold primary colours, mainly blue (whatever shade), but red is good too along with yellow. As to using them for an IL2 skin colour, yeah, I have had a little read of the threads about how to go about making a skin, but whether I could is another matter. I saw one somebody posted a little while ago that was all flames....I liked the look of that one. I do like the regular skins a lot too, but have yet to try just adding a bit of nose and tail art to them.

What do you do for a living?
I am a Biomedical Scientist at Fazakerley Hospital pathology laboratory.

Battlefield 1942 Questions:
How did you first start playing BF?
I was an avid player of MoHAA and a guy at work mentioned a game he had just bought called Battlefield 1942. Talking with him I realised that all the things I had said to my clan buddies in GFK that were missing from MoH seemed to be in BF. Artillery indirect fire, Air support, vehicles, medics and engineers and non-linear maps. After I bought and installed BF I think MoH has been loaded up three times only.

What do you consider the best things about BF?
The sheer variety of gameplay options open to you as a player. I love teamplay when it happens, even when being on the losing side (I rarely play on open public servers anymore because of this though).

Conversely, which things do you hate?
It's not something I hate really, but some of the maps are huge, yet only seem to use a very small part of the map. I can see the need in certain maps for limiting player movement around them in some respects, but the out of bounds areas make out-flanking manouvres quite hard on some of the maps.
I hate people using assault vehicles just to get to a plane faster than somebody else, I hate people using self propelled guns as tanks, I hate it when I have lined up a perfect shot on some unsuspecting foe only to find I miss them with my first shot and they turn around and shoot me from 200 yards with a pistol, I hate the 1.3 damage values for AA guns against planes.

What are your favourite maps?
Big open ones allowing flank attacks. Gazala, Alamein, Husky for examples.

Least favourite maps?
Berlin, Stalingrad. To easy for one side to totally dominate the other team.

What enhancements would you like to see?
I would like a troop carrier plane and a Bren carrier where you could set up a static MG post or move a prepositioned post somewhere better. I would like more undergrowth in the maps too. Bocage would be awsome and a lot harder if the hedge lines had hedges on top of them.

The Hussars Questions:
How did you find the Hussars or how did they find you?

In the mists of time many moons ago, a guy called Baldric posted a few messages on Battlefield1942.co.uk forums. I replied to a few of his posts. Many other seemingly sensible people were around the boards at that time, and many fine and funny threads were posted and replied too. (This was in the days before Turks Meister and the spam fests you must understand, threads were a lot fewer than they are today. Generally you had less than a page of new posts over a 24 hour period.)
In those long lost halcyon days of yore the Hussars first came into being. One fine day I was invited to join their erstwhile ranks and accepted it as my duty to help out King and Country (and the colonials) recognise a Scouse accent from the babble of speech heard on RW and TS.....a task that is sadly still my duty to perform.

How does playing with the Hussars compare to other games/matches?
To be pefrectly frank I have a lot more fun playing matches or messing around with the Hussars than any other group I have played online games with.....even with the occasional TK that goes with it....Hope the rest of the Hussars feel the same, and I promise to try to stay out of the nasty planes where I do most of my TKs from.

What changes (if any) would you like the Hussars as a clan to consider?
I think we have enough players to have a bash at IL2 with an IL2 clan...if only to see just how bad I am flying in that game too.

Computer Questions:
What other PC talents (if any) do you have?
I can crash a system in under 10 minutes if I put my mind to it. I like the fact that XP seems a lot more robust that W95/98 I had previously.

What sort of system do you have at the moment?
P4 1.7, GF3 ti200/64meg, 512 ram, Creative SBLive 5.1, BYBB connection (128up 512down I think), XPHome (SP1)
*Update Feb 2006*
After a recent rebuild I now have a P4/3.2 HT, 2G RAM, GF6600GT/256 and more case fans than you can shake a stick at (provided you only ever try to shake sticks at a number of fans that is less than 4). I also have a number of small blue LED's shining out of the front of the case, apparently these make the machine run faster because blue light is faster than red light (or some such pseudo-scientific claptrap).

What would your dream system be?
Not got a clue. I will wait until the games I want are unplayable on this system then get something that will play the games I want when the time comes.

Any PC games you are really looking forwards to?

Dunno really, I rarely if ever buy PC mags any more. Generally I wait until somebody I know has a game and tells me it`s really good. If they like the games I currently like I will probably like that too. That's how I ended up getting hold of a copy of IL2, Medievil Total War and Battlefield 1942. I did buy HalfLife Generations, but as yet the thing is still sitting by the PC with the wrapper still intact seeing as I bought it cheap when I got BF

Thanks for your time, Mark
